The Thabo Mbeki Bus Station was officially named and opened on 10 October 2025, as part of October Transport Month, marking a key milestone in the rollout of the Leeto La Polokwane Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS). The official opening was led by the Executive Mayor of Polokwane, Cllr. John Mpe.

The launch of the station represents the City of Polokwane’s continued commitment to modernising public transport infrastructure and improving accessibility, efficiency, and safety for commuters. Naming the station after former President Thabo Mbeki pays tribute to his contribution to South Africa’s democratic development and leadership legacy.

Addressing attendees, Executive Mayor Cllr. John Mpe emphasised the importance of integrated and reliable public transport in driving economic growth, promoting social inclusion, and enhancing mobility for residents. He reaffirmed the City’s commitment to delivering a people-centred, sustainable public transport system through the Leeto La Polokwane programme.

The opening of the Thabo Mbeki Bus Station forms part of the City’s October Transport Month activities and underscores the strategic role of Leeto La Polokwane in transforming public transport within the City, while improving the daily travel experience of its communities.
