In October 2025, the Deputy Minister of Transport conducted an oversight visit to Leeto La Polokwane, reaffirming government’s commitment to strengthening integrated public transport systems across South African cities.
The visit formed part of the Department of Transport’s oversight programme to assess progress on the implementation of Integrated Public Transport Networks (IPTN) and to ensure alignment with national transport policies and service delivery objectives. The Deputy Minister was welcomed by the Executive Mayor of Polokwane, Cllr. John Mpe, together with municipal leadership and project officials.
During the engagement, the Deputy Minister received briefings on the planning status, operational readiness, and phased implementation of Leeto La Polokwane, including infrastructure development, operations planning, and institutional arrangements. Discussions also focused on key milestones achieved, implementation challenges, and interventions aimed at improving efficiency, safety, and commuter experience.
The Deputy Minister highlighted the critical role of reliable, accessible, and sustainable public transport in supporting economic development and improving mobility for residents. The oversight visit reaffirmed national government’s support for the Leeto La Polokwane programme and underscored its strategic importance in transforming public transport within the City of Polokwane.
The City, under the leadership of Executive Mayor Cllr. John Mpe, remains committed to delivering a modern, integrated, and people-centred public transport system that responds to the needs of its communities.
